Flame Resistant
(FR) Shirts really are a must when you work with welding equipment, in
environments where quick fires are a threat, or around flammable
chemicals. They provide an extra layer of fire-resistant protection
between you and sparks, flashes and flame.
The government recommends wearing layers of FR clothing when you work on
dangerous job sites. Although you could wear 100% cotton clothing
under a FR shirt, it's a better idea to layer flame resistant garments
like t-shirts, button-down shirts and sweatshirts.
Many companies make flame resistant shirts. Bulwark, Carhartt, Rasco, Walls and even Wrangler
make FR clothing that protects and is comfortable for work. Most FR
garments are made of a special fabric blend that puts flame resistant
protection on the outside and soft fabric near your skin. Although it
manages to stay comfortable for a surprisingly long time, FR clothing in
general shouldn't be washed at home. Washing reduces its longevity.
